Seminar Reflection
Reaction:
In the seminar we were talking about the looks of the outsiders and why they chose the long greasy hair look. People were all saying different ideas and then Connor said something that for some reason stuck with me. He thought that the reason the Greasers had their hair long was to piss off the Socs, kind of like a middle finger to them. I’m not sure why this stuck with me but I think its because I can relate to it. I’m always messing around and not cleaning my room just to try to piss off my parents.
Connection:
My connection to The Outsiders is the song Thrift Shop by Macklemore. The song is a comity if you watch the music video but it has some smart ideas about people being tricked by clothing companies or other material objects. I made this connection because the Greaser and Socs war all started from money problems. If the two groups realized that having money doesn’t make you cool, then they wouldn’t have any reason to fight.
Self-evaluation:
In the seminar I felt that I did well with stating my opinion and supporting my argument on the topics. I think that I could work on using more evidence or examples to back up what I am saying. Giving examples will give me real proof on what I am trying to state.
Most beautiful line:
The most beautiful line, in our seminar was said by me. The line was “Life is not fun if its too easy.” The reason I think this is beautiful is because its true, and the fact that it sounds like something Gandhi would say. The fun part of life is the challenge of getting things. If we are given anything we want, then all value is taken away. For example money is considered valuable because its limited and you have to work for it. If everyone is just given as much money as they want then it would loose its value. This line beautifully explains the treasure in life of working.

Seminar Prewrite
1. In the book “The Outsiders” The character Ponyboy seems to be caught in a world that doesn’t fit who he is. Instead of showing his sweet, smart, not violent side, he has to hide to fit his background. Ponyboy was pushed into a place that he had to fight to be cool, and survive. Even though Ponyboy was calmer guy, he had to hide behind a mask of toughness to protect himself from his world and to prove to his brothers and friends that he can be like him.
2. In The Outsiders the main point of socialization is the Socs. In the book Ponyboy learns to hate the Socs and to always fight them, but the only reason they were continuing this war was because of financial differences. The Greaser were taught hate the Socs and the Socs were taught to hate the Greasers. They were socialized to fight about pointless things and they never get the chance to know each individual to find out who they are.
3. Some ideas about social class that I gained from this book is how much money can effect people. Growing up in a upper middle class house and town, I’ve never really gotten a chance to see how money can effect people. This book is a great example of that. The whole feud between the two groups is based on money. It gives the Greaser and Socs the idea that more money means better, but that’s not always true, Cherry tells Ponyboy that even though the Socs have money, they still have problem. Money started the wars between the Greasers and the Socs. The Socs were fighting because they thought they were better, and the greaser were fighting for pride and showing that they weren’t better because of money.
